Setbacks pile up

She was done with chemo, surgey, a second surgey, radiation, reconstruction. She thought she was on her way to recovery. Then another set back. Fever. Pain. Blood tests. The numbers didn’t look good. An infection somewhere. The ER didn’t know which of the dozen physicians or specialists to notify. No one was quite sure what was wrong this time. Another complicated twist in the journey.

It’s frustrating. No, it’s infuriating and frightening. Panic starts to set in. Morphine makes it difficult to think straight, to separate false fear from real things to be concerned about. What questions to ask the doctors before they rush out.

Then, a calm comes. Prayer and faith take over. God has a plan. Right now, it is really really really hard to understand. But there is a reason for this set back, some lesson, some new direction to take. There has to be.

She calls one person from the ER. The prayer tree engages. Prayer warriors mount steeds, brandish colorful flags and sharp spears, attacking fears, rallying the power of faith and love.

There is comfort in knowing how many rally and care and commit to staying alert and asking. How is she today? Any better? Need anything?

We can’t always see the miracles at work or the healing happening deep below the surface. But the comfort can be felt. It’s warm and powerful and reassuring, even during an ambulance ride and waiting for the doctor and waiting for more test results. God is good. All the time.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles." ‍
