The value of a church family
I’ve never been much of a joiner. I’m the classic introvert, perferring solitude to groups. The prospect of talking to people I don’t know terrifies me. Then, a funny thing happened. I discovered the immense value of joining a church and becoming part of a church family. It means instant friends and people who genuinely seem happy to see you. It’s close to a miracle for peope like me.
People go out of their way to extend a hand, introduce themselves, and ask about you and yours. After a few weeks the faces become familiar. You remember names. People remember yours and some tidbits you may have shared, like names of kids, jobs, hobbies, vacations….
I freqently recommend to my non-churchy friends and family that they give church membership a try, not just as a way to worship and learn the teachings of Christ—but also as a way to feel the life-changing value of fellowship.
Hugs from friendly people help a wide variety of woes. Friendly outreach breaks through loneliness, remind us we aren’t alone. People tell their stories, share their pains and worries, and dare to be vulnerable. Connections are created.
You can sit at home and read the Bible, pray, listen to a Christian radio station or view an online recording of a sermon. But that’s not the same as sitting next to someone, young or old, and experiencing with them the joy of singing, praising, and thanking our Lord for our blessings.
If you are experiencing a tough time—an illness, loss , regrets, or dependancies that are getting you down, a church family can help! You can find support and understanding, and even guidance, if you ask. And, most churches have plenty of events with pitch in dinners! Who doesn’t love a pitch in dinner.
Join a church. You’ll feel better.
